February 20, 2018 – University of California (US) announced that UCI along with some supermarkets, commercial catering businesses and restaurants are jointly running a programme to convert food wastage into electricity. The programme involves a specialized process to mix the food waste through a bio slurry & pumped in to anaerobic digesters filled with bacteria that can break down the material, producing biogas containing methane which is further used to produce electricity.
