Her title will be Vice President, Legal. Cohen joined the NWP Board of Directors in 2015.

Formed in 1916 by Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, the National Woman’s Party was a key organization in the fight for women’s suffrage, which resulted in the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in 1920. Today, based at the Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., the group produces educational programs, tours, exhibits, research and publications that explore the evolving role of women and their contributions to society. “It's a privilege to serve on the Board and now, the Executive Committee of the National Woman's Party,” said Michelle Cohen. “I'm proud to associate myself with an organization with such history and whose founders literally went to jail to secure my right to vote and that of all American women. The issues of women's advancement, pay equity, and representation on boards and across industries are causes for which I have advocated for years. I look forward to helping the NWP continue its mission in empowering all women through voting rights.”

As Chair of Ifrah Law’s E-Commerce Group, Michelle Cohen focuses on privacy, consumer protection, e-commerce, communications and media-related issues. Poll workers journey to reach India's most remote voters

Apr 22, 2019

NEW DELHI — The figures involved in India's general election are staggering: 900 million voters, 83 million first-time voters, 11 million poll workers, nearly 4 million electronic voting machines, 1 million polling booths and 570 special trains for migrant laborers and security personnel. Such numbers convey the scale of the world's biggest democratic exercise. But its smaller numbers that show India's commitment to reach every voter, no matter how remote. In India's six-week marathon election that began this week, the Election Commission has ruled that no voter should have to travel more than 2 kilometers, or just over a mile,...

Before India's election, voters feed on false information

Apr 22, 2019

NEW DELHI — New Delhi shop owner Ram Shankar Rai spends at least two hours a day going through political news and videos shared with him on social media. Rai looked intently at a flurry of videos and photos on WhatsApp about an Indian airstrike in Pakistan, including pictures labeled as militants' corpses. There was just one problem: The photos were not of militants but of casualties of a 2005 earthquake that killed thousands of people in Pakistan. But the 50-year-old didn't see anything amiss. "It's news," he said. "How can it be fake?" Before the world's largest democracy starts...

India weighs ban on popular online game after deaths

Apr 22, 2019

NEW DELHI — A boy's suicide this week in southern India after his mother scolded him for playing a popular online game has inflamed a national debate over whether the game should be banned. The 16-year-old's father demanded a ban on PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, known by the acronym PUBG, after his son hanged himself from a ceiling fan at their Hyderabad home following a reprimand for wasting time online rather than studying for an English exam, according to Indian news reports. At the heart of the conflict in India is a cultural norm: Parents expect their children, many of whom live...
