Her title will be Vice President, Legal. Cohen joined the NWP Board of Directors in 2015.

Formed in 1916 by Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, the National Woman’s Party was a key organization in the fight for women’s suffrage, which resulted in the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in 1920. Today, based at the Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., the group produces educational programs, tours, exhibits, research and publications that explore the evolving role of women and their contributions to society. The National Monument houses an extensive collection of suffrage banners, archives and artifacts documenting the continuing effort by women and men of all races, religions and backgrounds to win voting rights and equality for women under the law.

“It's a privilege to serve on the Board and now, the Executive Committee of the National Woman's Party,” said Michelle Cohen. “I'm proud to associate myself with an organization with such history and whose founders literally went to jail to secure my right to vote and that of all American women. The issues of women's advancement, pay equity, and representation on boards and across industries are causes for which I have advocated for years. I look forward to helping the NWP continue its mission in empowering all women through voting rights.”

AP Interview: Maldives ex-president says debt under audit

Feb 16, 2019

NEW DELHI — Ex-Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed said Thursday that the country is seeking to reduce the more than $3 billion he estimates it could owe China, some of which he said came in the form of "ill-gotten wealth" for the previous government of President Yameen Abdul Gayoom. A close adviser to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and candidate for parliamentary elections in April, Nasheed spoke to The Associated Press at a climate change lecture in New Delhi, a day after Maldives' top prosecutor charged Yameen with money laundering. The charges are linked to $1 million allegedly found in Yameen's bank...

Third of Himalayan glaciers can no longer be saved: study

Feb 16, 2019

KATHMANDU, Nepal — One-third of Himalayan glaciers will melt by the end of the century due to climate change, threatening water sources for 1.9 billion people, even if current efforts to reduce climate change succeed, an assessment warns. If global efforts to curb climate change fail, the impact could be far worse: a loss of two-thirds of the region's glaciers by 2100, said the Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment released Monday by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development. "Global warming is on track to transform the frigid, glacier-covered mountain peaks of the Hindu Kush Himalayas cutting across eight countries to...

Feb 16, 2019

NEW DELHI — A leopard strayed into a residential area in northern India on Thursday and injured at least four people before it was locked inside a room, a forest ranger said. Kuldip Kumar said a group of rangers reached the area in Jalandhar city in northern Punjab state after residents alerted police. He said the leopard bit one ranger and clawed two others when they tried to capture it with a net, and injured at least one resident who pelted it with rocks. The injuries were not life threatening. Kumar said the animal entered a room in a building...

In Iran, parched lands hollowed by water pumping now sinking

Feb 16, 2019

TEHRAN, Iran — Fissures appear along roads while massive holes open up in the countryside, their gaping maws a visible sign from the air of something Iranian authorities now openly acknowledge: the area around Tehran is literally sinking. Stressed by a 30-year drought and hollowed by excessive water pumping, the parched landscape around Iran's capital has begun to sink dramatically. Seen by satellite and on foot around the city, officials warn that what they call land subsidence poses a grave danger to a country where protests over water scarcity already have seen violence. "Land subsidence is a destructive phenomenon," said...

Pakistan kicks off year's first polio campaign in 2019

Feb 16, 2019

ISLAMABAD — A Pakistani health official says the country has kicked off its first nationwide polio vaccination campaign for the year in efforts to eradicate the crippling disease by the end of 2019. Pakistan is one of three countries in the world where polio is still endemic. The other two are Afghanistan and Nigeria. But militant threats and deep-rooted superstition have spurred many parents, particularly in areas bordering Afghanistan, to refuse to vaccinate their children. Rana Safdar says the drive that started on Monday is targeting 39.2 million under-five children across the country, except for some areas badly hit by...
