Not Suspended: IIT Bombay Faculty Forum Backs Accused Professor In Death Case, Holds Campus March

The death of 20-year-old IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode has triggered protests and a wider debate over academic malpractice, student-faculty relations and caste allegations on campus.Wakode, a second-year student in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, was allegedly found using a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination on September 18. IIT Bombay had said he uploaded the question paper to an AI platform to seek answers. The institute later apologised for its earlier statements about the circumstances surrounding his death, saying the matter remains under investigation.Wakode’s family has alleged caste-based harassment and filed a complaint naming Professor Suryanarayana Doolla, among others. Police have registered an FIR invoking provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
