Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan said the sea, traditionally considered a shared space for humanity, is becoming increasingly competitive in the 21st century, with geography also being weaponised.Admiral Swaminathan said there is now a contest to control sea resources as the maritime domain becomes increasingly competitive.“The sea belongs to the common heritage of humanity, and its natural state is to remain free, open, egalitarian, and ungoverned so that anyone can use it for rightful and legitimate purposes," he said at News18 DEFCON 2026.“But much of that is changing in the 21st century, and there are three predominant factors," he added.Admiral Swaminathan said geography is being weaponised in the 21st century, highlighting the changing nature of the maritime domain.
