The government is stepping up efforts to ensure that Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charges on eligible UPI merchant transactions are not passed on to consumers. Banks have been advised to prevent merchants from transferring MDR costs to customers.The latest UPI framework keeps person-to-person payments free, while MDR applies only to specified merchant transactions above ₹2,000.
